From Kumamon Tram to Ark Hotel

My friends and I embarked on a delightful journey aboard the charming Kumamon Tram, winding our way to the historic Kumamoto Castle. Little did we know that Kumamoto, with all its allure, would reveal itself as a somewhat country treasure.

Our brief stay in Kumamoto unfolded under overcast skies. As evening approached, we arrived at our hotel, the Ark Hotel, nestled in this charming corner of the city.

Ark Hotel Kumamoto

Everyone is aware that Kumamoto once endured a devastating earthquake. Recently, the partially restored Kumamoto Castle has been completed after the damage it sustained. During that time, some of the buildings in Kumamoto city center were also affected.

Despite the devastating earthquake, this particular hotel building emerged unscathed. As a result, the local government recognized it as an outstanding architectural structure.

Upon entering, we were greeted by adorable dolls scattered throughout the place. These two snowman, dressed in an endearing and seasonally fitting manner, caught our attention.

Relax in the spacious lobby chairs, with Kumamon himself as your companion. This indispensable mascot of Kumamoto has made immeasurable contributions to the city, even amidst the devastating impact of the recent earthquake.

Back then, a creative designer created this iconic “Kumamon.” Little did they know that this lovable bear would skyrocket to fame. Thanks to the wealth generated by Kumamon-related merchandise and tourism, the entire economy of Kumamoto experienced a remarkable revival.

At the front desk, we were efficiently assisted with our check-in process. Adjacent to it, there are complimentary travel information brochures about local attractions in Kumamoto, as well as recommendations for nearby dining and shopping spots.

The room, though not large, is comfortable and fully equipped. The large windows offer excellent views.

The room is a spacious double room with two large beds. Inside the room, there are both dehumidifiers and humidifiers, ensuring a comfortable and dry environment. The mattress strikes a perfect balance between softness and firmness, making it exceptionally comfortable for a good night’s sleep.

After steeping the Kumamoto-produced Lemongrass Tea provided in the room, you’ll enjoy a caffeine-free, non-greasy beverage that promotes restful sleep.

This is the view from the window early in the morning. It appears to be a misty and drizzly day today.

The breakfast buffet is located in the ground-floor café.

As I walked into the restaurant, a rich aroma of freshly baked bread enveloped me. Near the entrance, there was a bread toaster, and the master baker continuously placed freshly made dough into the oven, ensuring a steady supply of delicious croissants.

The result? Mouthwatering croissants that are both soft and flaky.

Hemp Seed Bread – Oh, how I’ve missed my beloved hemp seed (poppy seed) bread!  Also known as a superfood, hemp seeds are rich in enzymes, abundant protein, various minerals, plant fibers, antioxidants, and have an excellent balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Authentic German bread has an exceptionally robust texture. It lacks any frills and instead offers a solid, slightly salty dough with the delightful aroma of wheat. I once had the pleasure of savoring it in Tokyo.

P.S. Hemp seed bread is highly nutritious and legally used as a baking ingredient in Japan. Everyone, regardless of age or gender, can enjoy this wholesome delight!

They also serve jam made from blueberries and strawberries sourced from the Aso Mountain region in Kyushu.

These jams come from the Mokunouchi Farm on the Aso Plateau. And if you find them irresistible, you can even purchase a jar to take home.

The ‘Vinegar-Marinated Autumn Eggplant Cold Dish’ is both appetizing and pairs well with rice.

The Mentaiko produced in Fukuoka, Kyushu, is particularly famous. It’s made by marinating Alaskan pollock roe with salt, and for an extra kick, some varieties are further infused with spicy chili sauce, earning them the name ‘Karame Mentaiko’ or ‘Spicy Mentaiko.

A traditional dish from Kyushu where Japanese mustard-flavored miso and spices are stuffed into the holes of lotus root. The lotus root is then coated with wheat flour batter containing egg yolk and deep-fried. This dish offers a delightful crunch and a hint of spiciness.

Starting our journey from Kumamoto all the way to Kurokawa Onsen, we’ll be having breakfast as soon as it opens at 6:30 AM. Luckily, we’ll beat the crowds and enjoy a peaceful morning.

I started my day with a plate of fresh salad, accompanied by a traditional Japanese sesame dressing.

茶泡飯 (Chazuke): In ancient Japan, samurai warriors ingeniously poured hot tea over cold rice to save time during battles. The dish involves pouring either tea or dashi (a flavorful broth) over rice, along with various toppings.

Kumamoto’s Seaweed Sauce:

Nestled along the coast, Kumamoto boasts abundant seafood from the Ariake Sea. But what truly sets it apart is its unique seaweed sauce. Crafted from meticulously selected dried seaweed, this additive-free condiment is simmered to perfection.

Crispy Sweet and Sour Pork Meatballs:

The richness of tender pork with the zing of vinegar and sugar. Perfectly balanced, they’re a flavor explosion in every bite!

Crispy Seaweed-Crusted Sea Bream Fillets is a classic and delightful fish dish.

Crispy Burdock and Green Pepper Tempura:

When it comes to Japanese tempura, even those who aren’t big fans of vegetables, like green peppers, are willing to give this a try.

In addition, they also offer a selection of nutritious nuts, such as almonds, raisins, walnuts, and oats.

This Italian coffee machine, crafted using the distillation method to extract coffee essence, offers a delightful range of brews: from the classic, bold Americano to the velvety latte and the indulgent cappuccino. Each cup is a symphony of flavor, meticulously prepared by this elegant espresso maker.

After indulging in a hearty breakfast and savoring a steaming latte, capture a memorable moment with the iconic Kumamon bear, and then hit the road!
