At 6:00 AM, the alarm clock promptly rang, signaling the start of our snow-covered journey today. Our itinerary takes us quite a distance, all the way to Asahikawa and Biei. And conveniently, our morning schedule aligns perfectly with a visit to Asahiyama Zoo in Hokkaido.
Early in the morning, after grooming and dressing, I glanced out the window. To my delight, the relentless snowfall of the past few days has finally ceased today!
Today’s agenda involves exploring the outskirts, where we express our gratitude to the heavens for gracing us with a day of stunningly beautiful weather!
However, as soon as I stepped out of the hotel, a chill enveloped me! Thankfully, I wasn’t deceived by the sunshine. Today, I emerged from my cozy layers, bundled up tightly. I checked the temperature, and to my surprise, it’s a bone-chilling minus 7 degrees Celsius!
In the narrow alleyways near the hotel, there exists a charming little coffee shop called Cafe Ranban.
So, I stepped inside to savor a cup of coffee, indulge in a delightful breakfast, and then continue my journey!
In front of Sapporo Station, the streets, which were deeply covered in snow last night, have been meticulously cleared during this serene morning, taking advantage of the snow pause.
The journey between Asahikawa and Sapporo offers a direct round-trip bus service, albeit with limited departure times. However, this time, I opted for the JR train. Asahikawa Station serves as a pivotal hub in the heart of Hokkaido, where the Hakodate Main Line, Soya Main Line, and Furano Line intersect. It also marks the starting point for both the Soya Main Line and the Furano Line.
The Ishikari Kita Main Line, which leads to the Dotou Abashiri region, originates from the nearby Shin-Asahikawa Station. However, all the trains on this line depart from Asahikawa Station.
It’s worth noting that this station also holds the distinction of being one of Japan’s northernmost elevated train stations.
Amidst the snow, the Asahikawa Station stands serenely, its exterior resembling a work of art.
The interior architecture and decor of the station are equally impressive. Bathed in natural light and complemented by the warmth of indoor heating, visitors are shielded from the harsh cold of the northern region.
The Asahikawa Station, with its soaring ceilings and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, rivals the spaciousness of an airport terminal.
When visiting Hokkaido, shopping isn’t limited to Sapporo alone.
In spring 2015, the AEON MALL Asahikawa Station Front opened its doors, completely altering the perception of Asahikawa.
No longer just known for its zoo and natural beauty, it has now ascended to become a brand-new shopping landmark in Hokkaido!
Many homemakers arrive at the supermarket early in the morning to purchase local specialties and fresh agricultural and fishery products. Adjacent to the supermarket lies a delightful culinary area.
As I prepared to disembark and catch the bus, I was immediately greeted by the adorable sign of Asahiyama Zoo. This charming zoo holds the distinction of being Japan’s northernmost, making it an absolute must-visit during any Hokkaido trip!
It’s evident that two animal superstars steal the show here: the polar bears and the penguins!
Arriving at Asahikawa Station, I eagerly awaited the bus bound for Asahiyama Zoo. Here’s how to catch it:
- Head to the north side of Asahikawa Station (駅).
- Look for the bus stop labeled “No. 6” (「6號乘車處」) on the eastern side.
- Hop onto the Asahikawa Electric Railway Bus for the “Asahiyama Zoo Line” (41, 42, or 47). Buses run approximately every 30 minutes.

Asahiyama Zoo, which opened its gates in 1967, is situated in the outskirts of Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, Japan. It proudly holds the distinction of being Japan’s northernmost zoo.
However, during the year 1994, Asahiyama Zoo encountered a period of operational decline.
Back then, the zoo director and staff rallied together with a shared mission fueled by deep love for the animals. Their goal was to create a refreshed image for Asahiyama Zoo—one that would foster high interaction between visitors and the animals, all while maintaining a humanized experience.
Unexpectedly, through patient and dedicated management, Asahiyama Zoo has seen a surge in visitors over the past three years, surpassing even Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo. It now ranks among the top three most visited zoos in all of Japan!

Asahiyama Zoo in the remote reaches of Hokkaido offers children the ultimate opportunity to get up close and personal with animals.
Asahiyama Zoo’s standout feature lies in its collection of native wildlife from Hokkaido, including deer, eagles, cranes, and the now-extinct wolves. Additionally, the zoo showcases various animals from around the world, such as polar bears, apes, big cats, and giraffes. It’s a captivating blend of local and global biodiversity!

It seems that animals, much like us humans, also become languid and sluggish when the weather turns cold.
Witnessing a giraffe lost in thought amidst the snowy landscape for the first time was utterly endearing!
Isn’t the mighty hippopotamus practically impervious to the cold? Its thick skin seems to be wrapped in two snug jackets, providing ample warmth.
This is the unique Hokkaido red fox! In fact, its face, from certain angles, resembles that of an Akita. Its coat is a delightful orange, and its sleepy eyes give it a charming demeanor. These foxes love to wander along the mountain roads of Hokkaido.
Twisting their hips while walking is absolutely adorable!
Encountering the cold, several raccoons sought refuge in caves. These particular raccoons emerged, their movements languid and unhurried, exuding a sense of relaxation.
Venturing into the owl zone,
But why is this little owl all alone, nestled in the snowy expanse? So adorable!
As I ventured into the roller coaster zone, I was taken aback. The track ahead didn’t seem designed for cars at all.
A delightful Lesser Panda, with its endearing appearance, leisurely ambled over from the opposite side.
The round, furry face and body are incredibly adorable!
Polar Bear Zone:
Wow, I’m so excited! Getting ready to enter the polar bear zone. The best thing about Asahiyama Zoo is that you can observe animals up close.

Their white fur glistens under the sunlight, and their playful antics are a joy to behold.
Asahiyama Zoo provides a unique opportunity to witness polar bears swimming gracefully in their spacious enclosure.
The design of the Seal Pavilion is ingeniously crafted. In the upper right corner of the illustration, there’s a 1.5-meter circular tunnel called the “Seaway”, which directly connects to the large underwater tank below.
It’s a captivating experience that brings us closer to these delightful marine creatures! This architectural marvel allows visitors to observe playful seals in their natural habitat. The tunnel provides an intimate view as the seals glide gracefully through the water.
Right next to the Seal Pavilion, you’ll find the Penguin House. Inside, there’s an underwater tunnel where penguins swim back and forth, right before your eyes.

After watching the lively penguins leaping in the water, their wobbly and comical movements on land had everyone in stitches!
Keep an eye out for the king penguins during your zoo adventure—they’re sure to melt your heart! 🐧. Its black face is adorned with a touch of orange blush, as if delicately painted. But what truly captures hearts is its chubby, waddling gait—reminiscent of a toddler taking its first steps. Absolutely heartwarming! And this charming scene unfolds when the penguin isn’t even out for a stroll.
Their dignified presence and adorable antics make them a favorite among visitors.
