Ueno Park, a green oasis in the heart of Tokyo, beckons visitors with its enchanting blend of natural beauty and cultural attractions. Whether or not you catch a glimpse of cherry blossoms, there’s something for everyone within its sprawling grounds.
In ancient times, the grounds of Ueno Park were home to Tokugawa Ieyasu’s “Kaneiji Temple.” Nestled in Tokyo’s Taito Ward (the historic downtown area), this park now bears the official name “Ueno Onshi Park” (a fitting title, considering it’s free to enter!). It proudly holds the distinction of being Japan’s very first urban park.
Playtime for All Ages
Families can unwind at the spacious front plaza, where kids can run and play freely. It’s an ideal spot for parents to enjoy a coffee while keeping an eye on their little ones.
Starbucks at the Heart
The central plaza boasts a colossal Starbucks coffee shop, often hailed as one of Tokyo’s top three most beautiful Starbucks locations. Grab a seat, sip your coffee, and watch the world go by.
Cherry Blossoms Galore
With over 1,000 cherry trees, Ueno Park transforms into a pink wonderland from late March to early April.
Ueno Park hosts a diverse array of cherry blossom varieties, including Kanzan, Kohigan, and the elegant weeping Shidare-zakura.
The ephemeral beauty of these blossoms draws visitors year after year.
The iconic Sakura Avenue (Sakura-dori) stretches for about half a kilometer, flanked by hundreds of cherry blossoms. It’s a favorite spot for strolling, picnicking, and capturing Instagram-worthy moments.
